What is a Man?

What is a Man? The straightforward (although some would argue, dated) definition of man is, “adult human male.” In this meetup we are going to be exploring what, if anything, it means to be a man.

The term “masculinity” has historically been associated with being a man. The dictionary defines masculinity as, “a set of attributes, behaviours, and roles traditionally associated with men and boys. In some circles, masculinity, or “manliness,” is seen merely as a social construct, and of course some traditions do outlive their usefulness.

During this talk, we will explore the origins of “masculinity” and how this has changed over the last century. The career success of Jordan Peterson (and Andrew Tate) has been in part because men seem to be in a state of crisis as to their roles in society and to their relationships towards, and with, women.

A man 50 years ago would have gotten cancelled for not being masculine enough, whereas in 2023, a man may get cancelled for being too masculine. We hear phrases such as, “toxic masculinity,” “beta male,” “smash the patriarchy” and “soy boy.” There seems to be a war, or shift on “manhood” and “gender roles.” If masculinity were truly toxic, then presumably kids growing up without dads would be better off. Is this the case?

And where does this leave relationships between men and women? In the last few years, a common phrase has been “the future is female.” Is this really true? …and if true, would this be a good thing for Western Civilisation? Lots to discuss!

Come join the CCC group for stimulating and fresh conversation and debate! We’re a friendly, welcoming bunch. Grab a drink at the bar and come upstairs for some lively, open and honest chat. All good faith opinions will be welcomed and respected.
