What is it like being an academic at the heart of free speech battles in universities in the UK? Brexit, lockdowns, pronouns, climate change will all be on the agenda in this talk on cancel culture in higher education and what we can all do to fight back.
Our September meetup will feature guest speaker David Paton of Nottingham University. Dr Paton is a Professor of Economics and Associate Dean of Faculty and holds the Chair of Industrial Economics and is editor of the International Journal of the Economics of Business. His research covers a range of issues including gambling taxation, teenage pregnancy, assisted suicide, the post-Brexit economy, Covid vaccine mandates and the economics of cricket. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed academic articles and has acted as an advisor to numerous Government departments and agencies.
Paton was one of the few UK economists to speak out publicly in favour of Brexit. More recently he has been a prominent voice in academia speaking out against lockdowns and vaccine mandates.
Join CCC Manchester for stimulating and fresh conversation and debate! We’re a friendly, welcoming bunch, and many folks even choose to stay well past 4pm to continue the discussion! Grab a drink at the bar and come upstairs for some lively, open and honest chat. All good faith opinions are welcomed and respected. We don’t charge for our events but we do ask for a small cash donation on arrival to help pay for the room and Meetup membership.
