Are We in Danger of Losing Free Speech in Pubs?

Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 2:00 PM

If we don’t have the freedom to speak in pubs, is British culture as we’ve known it, doomed?

For our February meetup, we are back at the newly “refreshened” Briton’s Protection, and we will be welcoming from Belfast, guest speaker, Simon Chambers.

Simon is a practising litigator and is no stranger to high profile litigation, having made his name representing over 150 Northern Irish families, who successfully recovered their money after investing in fraudulent Italian property schemes run by the Calabrian Mafia and the IRA.Simon is currently running two gender critical cases, one involving Graeme Linehan and 22 others who were refused service in a well-known Belfast bar, and the other for Sara Morrison against her former employer, Belfast Film Festival. Simon will talk about his ongoing cases and prevailing trends in litigation and society more generally with particular regard to the current judicial approach to gender critical cases.

Simon has been practising as a litigation specialist and “problem solver” for nearly 25 years at Russell and Company Solicitors. He also practises in Family and Criminal law, conveyancing and commercial matters and is a member of the Law Society of Northern Ireland Council and sits on the Free Speech Union NI Advisory Council.

Join CCC Manchester for stimulating and fresh conversation and debate! We’re a friendly, welcoming bunch, and many folks even choose to stay well past 4pm to continue the discussion! Grab a drink at the bar and come upstairs for some lively, open and honest chat. All good faith opinions are welcomed and respected. We don’t charge for our events but we do ask for a small cash donation on arrival to help pay for the room and Meetup membership.
