These days it feels as though you can’t get away from the word, “woke.” The English-speaking West seems to be living in an increasingly “woke” world but nobody, or at least very few people, are able to give a concise definition of what that word actually means.
Some folks use the term “woke” as a badge of honour, as, being awake related to issues of racism, sexism, discrimination and social justice. While others use “woke” to describe individuals or corporations with a specific intolerant, “oppressor” vs. “oppressed” world view, and not subscribing to that world view will get you cancelled. Does social media contribute to the turmoil? “Get woke, go broke?” It’s all so confusing.
Is “woke” simply the 21st century version of political correctness? Could it be a Left vs Right thing, or is that too simplistic?
At this month’s CCC meetup, we will give a brief history of the word, discuss how it came to prominence, and debate whether living in a “woke” world will make the West a better and more just society, or a society less open to free thought and speech. Let’s talk about it!
Come join the CCC group for stimulating and fresh conversation and debate! We’re a friendly, welcoming bunch. Grab a drink at the bar and come upstairs for some lively, open and honest chat. All good faith opinions will be welcomed and respected.
